Nutmeg production involves cultivating nutmeg trees, which yield the aromatic seed known as nutmeg and its outer covering, mace. Let’s explore the Top 5 Nutmeg Producing States in India.
Kerala stood out as India's top nutmeg producer, accounting for an impressive 95.68% of the total production with 14.59 thousand tonnes, owing its success to the region's favourable tropical climate.
Karnataka had a minor role in nutmeg production, contributing only 3.21%, producing 0.49 thousand tonnes. Although its share was notably smaller than Kerala's, it added variety to nutmeg production.
Maharashtra contributes just 0.66% to the total, yielding 0.10 thousand tonnes. The state's comparatively lower participation is attributed to less favourable climatic and geographical conditions.
Tamil Nadu's share in India's nutmeg production was minimal, at 0.13%, with a production of 0.02 thousand tonnes. Nutmeg cultivation in Tamil Nadu encounters challenges akin to those in Maharashtra.
The combined contribution of the remaining states accounted for a modest 0.26% share. It produced 0.04 thousand tonnes, underscoring the limited prevalence of nutmeg cultivation in these regions.
