As of my last update in September 2021, India's total cotton cultivation area varies annually, typically around 12-13 million hectares. Please be aware that this data could have evolved since that time.
In 2022-2023, Gujarat took the lead with 8.55 million bales, accounting for 29% of the nation's total yield. This is due to favourable climate, soil, and modern farming methods.
Despite rainfed challenges, pests, and costs, Maharashtra is India's second-largest contributor to India's cotton production at 22%, yielding 6.5 million bales in 2022-2023.
Telangana ranked third in cotton production, contributing 17% to India's total with 5 million bales in 2022-2023, owing to its semi-arid climate, irrigation, and informed farming.
During 2022-2023, Andhra Pradesh secured the fourth rank in India's cotton production, yielding 2 million bales. The state cultivates a mix of long-staple and short-staple varieties.
Haryana ranks fifth in India's cotton production, contributing 6% with 1.8 million bales in 2022-2023. Its main focus is predominantly on irrigated medium staple cotton cultivation.
