Star Fruit Cultivation in India: Tips and Techniques

Published Aug 23, 2023

The Star fruit is a five-point star-shaped fruit with a sweet and sour taste. It comes in yellow or green and has two main types: a smaller sour version and a larger, sweeter one.

Star fruit trees thrive in warm, moist climates and can be cultivated in Indian hills up to 1,200m high. Adequate, evenly spread rainfall during growth ensures higher yield.

Star fruit grows in varied soils, like deep, well-draining types with organic matter. It adapts to alkaline and acidic conditions but thrives in slightly acidic soil, around pH 5.5 to 6.5.

In star fruit farming, diseases like leaf spot, black spot, anthracnose, flyspeck, root rot, and algal disease occur. Visit the local horticulture or agriculture department for control.

Water new star fruit saplings regularly until established and adjust watering during dry weather. Be careful not to overwater during heavy rainfall to avoid waterlogging.

Star fruit is typically gathered manually from trees or through mechanical shaking. The best time to harvest is when the fruit turns yellowish-green in the cooler morning hours.
