From Orchard to Your Plate: Pomelo Fruit Farming in India

Pomelo/ Chinese grapefruit or citrus maxima. Chakotra is famous across India. It is cultivated in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Punjab.

Baneshan, Kaghzi, Jabalpur, Bambai, Kasoori, Assam Red and Coorg Pink are some of the famous varieties. It is grown between 40-200 fruits/trees, depending on the variety.

Pomelo appreciates sunshine and well irrigation. Choose a site that receives sunshine, clear the land of any bushes, plough, mulch, and irrigate properly.

Plant the seeds at a proper depth and distance. Provide shade to the seedbed, and apply fertilizer. Once the seedlings are 6 months old, transplant them to the main field.

Pomelo requires fertilizer with balanced nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. For disease control, use pesticides and fungicides. Also, improve drainage and remove ill plants.

The Kagzi variety can yield up to 50-150 fruits a year. You can identify potential buyers like wholesalers and exporters. With proper marketing, you can make big profits.
