India grows five main commercial mushroom varieties: Button, Dhingri (oyster), Straw, Milky, and Shiitake mushrooms. These varieties are cultivated for their high demand and nutritional value.

Largest Mushroom Producing State in India

Bihar has become India’s top mushroom producer, producing over 28,000 tonnes in 2021-22, accounting for 10.82% of the national total. It has risen from 13th place three years ago, surpassing Maharashtra.

Maharashtra

According to horticulture board data, Maharashtra is the 2nd largest mushroom producer in India, following Bihar. The state contributes 9.89% to the country's total mushroom production.

Odisha

Odisha is India’s third-largest mushroom producer, with a 9.66% share of the national output. The state is particularly known for its highly popular straw mushrooms.

Haryana

Sonipat district in Haryana is renowned for mushroom cultivation. To boost production, the Haryana government offers a 40% subsidy to general farmers and up to 90% to scheduled caste farmers.

Punjab

Punjab is home to approximately 400 mushroom growers across various regions. The state's average annual mushroom production ranges between 45,000 and 48,000 tonnes.
