Hazelnuts are the most easily grown nut in India, and they can be found in almost every state. Hazelnuts are members of the same family as common cobnuts and filberts, which handle the shell and, to some extent, envelope during production.
Hazelnut varieties include Eennis, Barcelona, Lewis, Halls Giants, Casina, Butler, and Epsilon. Tonda Romana, Barcelona, Negret, Tonda Giffoni, Tonda Gentile delle Langhe, and Tombul are further notable hazelnut varieties.
Hazels may grow in pH levels that range from 5.5 to 7.5, but 7 is ideal for growth. Hazelnut trees may flourish in almost any soil type as long as it drains correctly. They do not grow well in marshy, wet places and do finest in light soils.
Hazelnut trees generate a satisfactory harvest in a mild climate with an average temperature of -10 degrees Celsius. As a result, hazelnut can be harvested in several places of India, including Jammu and Kashmir, the Northern Easter Himalayas, and Uttarakhand.
In the summer, 60 cm of soil on the opposite side must dry; the deeper layers might not dry till the end of the summer. From December to February, it then fills the shell of the nut. Irrigation is not required in cooler climates.
In one growing season, a fully grown hazelnut tree may yield up to 25 pounds of nuts. The total Hazelnut output is 2,800 marketable pounds per acre. The optimal time to pick hazelnuts is when they turn green to brown and begin to abscise.
