India is the third largest fish-producing country in the world. Accounting for a 7.56% share of global food production, it is the second largest producer when it comes to production through aquaculture.
The state accounts for 42 lakh tonnes of fish per year. The Pulasa fish from the state is in high demand throughout the year. Bocha, Tilapia, Koramenu, and Tella Chanuva are among the top fish species found in the state.
Hilsa is one of the tastiest and most in-demand fish found in the state. Producing around 17.42 Lakh tonnes of fish per year, the state is known as the second-largest producer of fish in the country.
Gujarat accounts for 20% of marine fish production and accounts for 8.35 Lakh tonnes of fish per year. Some of the popular fish species found in Gujarat include shrimp, Seer Fishes, Tunas, etc. popular fish species.
Tamil Nadu produces 6.82 Lakh tonnes of fish per year. It is the 4th largest fish producer in the country. Snakehead, Catla, and Tilapia fish species are some of the famous fish varieties.
Almost 905 fish species are found in the inland waters of Kerala, including marine waters. The state is responsible for producing fish amounting to 6.85 Lakh tonnes of fish per annum. Karimeen is the in-demand fish in Kerala.
