The financial year 2021 was full of ups and downs, not only for the tractor industry but for all sectors. The world faced a pandemic this year that directly affected tractor sales initially, but tractor companies came stronger over time. A report shows, many prominent tractor company CEOs said the covid-19 virus shook the tractor industry. We have to get used to living with it. The brands accepted this virus and turned out to be strong and maintain their position in the market.
The financial year’21 was tough during the first 2 months as sales dropped by 80% in April due to nationwide lockdown but post-lockdown phase saw a gradual demand recovery in all vehicle segments, tractor sales, which depend on a strong rural economy, remained robust. The overall yearly tractor sales recorded a boom of 26.86%. A growth displayed in comparison to the previous year as Apr’20-Mar’21 tractors sold 899429 units against 709002 units.
World’s No.1 Tractor Manufacturer Mahindra & Mahindra (Mahindra+Swajat+Trakstar) records a 17.79% hike in yearly tractor sales. Mahindra sold 343833 units of tractors in FY’21, which is 51932 units more in comparison to FY’20. Still, Mahindra tractors lost a huge market share by 2.94%, first time in the last 6 years Mahindra’s market share dropped to this level. Mahindra’s loss of Market share is equal to Tafe and Sonalika’s gain this year.
FY’21 is best year for India’s Youngest and fastest-growing Tractor Brand Sonalika (Sonalika +Solis) as they have gained 1.36% Market share and maintained ever highest market share of 13%. Sonalika’s yearly tractor sales increased by 41.64% as they sold 117503 units in FY’21 against 82958 units in FY’20.
Raman Mittal, Executive Director, Sonalika Group, said the company achieved a significant domestic growth of 41.6 per cent in FY21, which is the highest in industry and surpassed the industry growth (estimated at 26.7 per cent) in the most challenging year.
Escorts Group (Farmtrac+Powertrac+Digitrac) recorded a boom in their yearly tractor sales by 23.83%. The company’s sales stood at 101849 units, against 82252 units sold during FY’20. Escorts’ domestic tractor volumes crossed one lakh mark for the first time. Escorts Group lost market share by 0.28% in FY’21. During the First 6 months of FY’21 Escorts faced huge supply chain constraint which resulted in loss of market share.
John Deere tractors closes FY’21 on 9.52% Market share which is 0.12% less in comparison to the FY’20. John Deere sells 85610 units in FY’21 compared to 68322 units in FY’21. John Deere also faced huge supply chain constraint in the first 6 months of FY’21. Hopefully in FY’22 John Deere will cross 10% Market share.
New Holland tractors registered 33.96% growth in their yearly tractor sales, reported 35828 Tractor sales in FY’21 against 26745 units sold during FY'20. New Holland's market share increased by 0.21%, which is equal to the market share lost in FY’20.
Kubota Tractor yearly sales grew by 30.06%, with sales of 16809 units in FY’21 against 12924 units sold during FY'20. In FY’21, Kubota Tractors production has been started in INDIA along with Escorts Joint venture. In the next 2-3 Years Kubota can touch 30,000 Tractors annual sales.
VST Shakti’s domestic tractor sales increased by 21.17% to 8162 units in FY21 against 6703 units in FY20. VST Shakti is mainly dominated in less than 30 HP Mini & Compact Tractors but in FY’21 they have started focusing on Higher HP Category tractors under VIRAAJ Series (45 & 50 HP), also VST Shakti is launching few Models in FY’22 along with ZETOR Tractors in higher HP category.
This year has been incredibly good for Preet Tractors as it has left behind Indofarm, Captain, SDF and Force Motors in the list and shown a massive growth of 266% during this duration as compared to the year 2019-20. Preet very well managed to sell out a total of 6,014 tractors during 2020-21 in the domestic market compared to 1643 tractors in FY’20. Preet Tractors growth of 266% is really hard to believe but they grabbed 0.44% more market share in comparison to FY’20.
Indo Farm Tractor sales increased by 60.38% in FY 2021. Indo Farm sales were 4611 units in FY’21 compared to 2875 units in FY’20. Indo Farm tractors added 0.11% to its market share.
Captian Tractors also has shown a decent development of 42.36% this year when compared with 2019-20. Captains Tractors domestic sales of 4,446 tractors in FY’21 against 3123 tractors in FY’20. This assisted them with acquiring 0.48% of the total market share in 2020-21.
Force Motors has sold out a total of 4004 tractors in the domestic market during 2020-21. It has shown a good growth of 23.3% in 2020-21 when compared to 2019-20 while grabbing 0.41% of the total market share.
ACE Tractor sales increased by 23.60% in FY 2021 compared to FY 2020. ACE sales were 2540 units in FY’21 compared to 2055 units in FY’20.
SDF is the only player which shown –ve growth in tractor sales during FY’21. SDF’s sold 2418 units in FY21 and in FY20 it was 4102 sold. With the decline in sales, SDF also lost market share by 0.31%.
The overall growth of tractor sales in 2020-21 is ever highest in the decade, pandemic comes as the biggest opportunity for India's Tractor Industry. We missed the historical Tractor sales of 9 Lac Tractors by only 571 Units in FY'21. In FY'21, 8,99,429 Tractors were sold with 26.9% YOY growth.
Industry representatives and experts see tractor sales momentum continuing in FY22 too. “Tractor demand is expected to remain strong as rabi harvesting is progressing well along with the onset of sowing of summer crops in select markets,” said Hemant Sikka, President, Farm Equipment Sector, Mahindra & Mahindra.
