Mahindra Introduces AI-Enabled Sugarcane Harvesting for Kolhe SSK in Maharashtra

Ahmednagar, September 5, 2024: Mahindra & Mahindra became the first company in India to implement AI-powered technology for sugarcane harvesting at Sahakar Maharshi Shankarao Kolhe SSK Ltd. This groundbreaking technology uses AI to evaluate the ripeness of sugarcane through its sugar levels. It is all set to transform the sugarcane harvesting process in India.

The AI-powered sugarcane harvesting solution is currently in use on more than 100,000 acres of land in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Haryana. This state-of-the-art technology is being implemented to update the traditional sugarcane harvesting method. It guarantees precise crop gathering according to sugar levels, ultimately increasing yields and enhancing sugar extraction for farmers and mills.

Hemant Sikka, who is in charge of the Farm Equipment Division at Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., stressed the importance of this technological progress. He stated that "AI has the potential to impact agriculture with various advantages." Our AI-driven tool for analyzing sugarcane ripeness is a revolutionizing machinery in the sugarcane industry. Mahindra is dedicated to changing farming techniques through new technology, and we are pleased to collaborate with SSK on this endeavour.

Vivek Kolhe, Chairman of Kolhe Sugar Factory, praised the implementation of the new technology. He said that their mills are the first ones in India to utilize this AI-based harvesting. Moreover, He added, “Three years ago, we initially tried this technology on 3,000 acres and observed significant enhancements in sugar recovery. After seeing positive outcomes, we have now expanded the program to cover our entire catchment area. This technology could provide substantial long-term advantages to both the sugar industry and farmers in India.”

Mahindra's AI technology employs advanced precision agriculture methods, such as spectrometry and satellite imaging, to assess the sugar levels. The AI reviews data from the crop leaves to decide on the best time for harvesting, guaranteeing optimal yield.

India, the world's largest sugar producer, has many states as major producers and can majorly benefit by implementing this AI-based approach. This new technology not only boosts efficiency but also aligns with the country's objective of raising farming productivity and income for farmers.
