While Tesla first brought electric vehicles into the market, AutoNxt, a promising startup, has come up with India's 1st electric tractor in Thane, Maharashtra. The upcoming models will feature fast charging and Level 3 autonomous technology, offering farmers an efficient and affordable alternative to traditional diesel tractors. AutoNxt founder explains the company's goal to drive sustainable farming across India by reducing costs and environmental impact while improving overall farming operations with advanced technology.
While diesel tractors are less expensive, a shift towards electric tractors is highly needed. These tractors have a lower running cost, better torque, and efficiency compared with the diesel version. This transition becomes much more relevant in the wake of the country's target for 30% electric mobility by the year 2030.
Of course, AutoNxt is by no means the only player in this EV market. However, companies like Mahindra, Kubota, HAV, and Sonalika are also developing products in this lineup. This could bring electric farming vehicles into the mainstream.
Electric tractors, while initially more expensive, offer long-term savings. For instance, the running cost of an electric tractor is significantly lower than that of a diesel one. According to IOPscience, if a diesel tractor costs Rs. 93.5/ km to run, an electric tractor only costs Rs.14.15/ km. This makes electric tractors more preferable in the long run.
AutoNxt's founder, Kaustubh Dhonde, started the company after observing the challenges faced by his uncle, a farmer. His uncle had to sell his diesel tractor due to high fuel costs and health issues caused by constant use. This motivated Dhonde to develop a highly sustainable and efficient commercial tractor.
AutoNxt is also incorporating advanced autonomous technology in its electric tractors, similar to what Tesla uses in its cars. The tractors will have Level 3 autonomy, which means they can operate without a driver within the confines of a farm. However, these "driverless" tractors will not work on public roads.
Another important factor is charging time. AutoNxt tractors can be fully charged in just three hours, addressing one of the potential buyers' biggest concerns.
Looking ahead, AutoNxt aims to capture 10-20% of the Indian tractor market by 2030. At present, the company is focused on the B2B model; it works with organisations leasing tractors to small farmers.
By offering rental options, AutoNxt helps farmers experience electric tractors without the burden of high upfront costs. While electric tractors are still new, AutoNxt is confident that they will play a significant role in the future of farming in India.
