Let’s learn more about Remabhai S's unique terrace dragon fruit farming and how she is earning Rs 1 lakh/ Month.
When she was planning to start dragon fruit farming on the terrace, most people told her that dragon fruit couldn’t thrive without soil. However, Remabhai took the challenge to make it possible to grow soilless dragon fruit in Kerala.
You might be wondering why she chose soilless dragon fruit farming. She did not have any vacant land for farming, so she opted for the soilless technique. Also, she did not have access to much resources or the ability to fetch soil to her terrace. So, instead, she used large plastic barrels filled with compost, sawdust, leaves and organic matter to create the perfect growing medium for dragon fruit plants.
Remabhai’s story inspires many farmers in the country. The unique idea of growing soilless dragon fruit is a sustainable farming technique, which is the future of farming.
Remabhai shared how she scaled the business and earned 1 lakh per month. She started with 50 barrens on her rooftop, each with a 4-cent area.
In a conversation with a media house, she shared, “After people heard that she is growing organic dragon fruit, they came from far away places to buy it from her”.
Remabhai S shared the secret behind growing dragon fruit without soil :
Using the Right Growing Medium : Instead of soil, Remabhai uses a mix of green leaves, sawdust, rice peel, and compost to provide the necessary nutrients. She made drainage holes to avoid water stagnation and proper aeration for the roots.
Use Organic Fertilizers : After learning that organic fertilizers cost a lot, Remabhai made the organic manure by mixing fish, prawn skin, Crab shells, Jaggery and vegetable waste. She decomposed all this for three months to create a nutrient-rich blend for plants.
Remabhai plans to expand her farming by experimenting with other exotic fruits. She is determined to help other aspiring farmers, especially women, follow their farming dreams. With her YouTube channel, ‘JC’s World,’ she shares her expertise in soilless farming and organic fertilizer making.
Remabhai’s success story is truly inspiring. Her strong will and passion helped her gain immense success in dragon fruit farming. More importantly, she continues to prove that age is no barrier to learning new things and creating success in unexpected ways.
