Google Launches AI-Led Projects for Agriculture in India

Google introduced new AI partnerships that focus on agriculture, sustainability, and improved healthcare, in Bangalore on October 22. The company is working with local and international groups to make the best use of AI solutions. These solutions aim to manage urban waste, enhance farming, and improve diabetic retinopathy screening.

These plans were revealed at a roundtable event in the city, which marked the fifth anniversary of Google's Research Lab in the region. The announcement follows the tenth Google for India event, where the company showcased how AI can benefit people, businesses, and society.

Enhancing Agriculture

In agriculture, Google is offering developers access to its Agricultural Landscape Understanding (ALU) Research API. This tool uses AI and remote sensing to provide detailed insights about farms across India. It can identify field boundaries, water bodies, and vegetation. Additionally, this technology can measure their areas. By using high-resolution satellite data and advanced ML, this technology helps farmers make better decisions about resource allocation and farm management.

Advancing Sustainability

Google's partners in India will use this technological solution to improve the recycling process. Using this technology, plastic-waste sorting will help reduce landfill-bound recyclables. It will also speed up the country's circular economy. The model uses Google's TensorFlow software for machine learning and AI to find materials. The technology offers pixel-level analysis to aid decision-making. Moreover, it includes a system that checks the quantity and quality of waste before it reaches recycling centers and after it has been sorted.

Supporting Healthcare

In addition, Google aims to support India’s circular economy by collaborating with organizations like Saahas Zero Waste, Forus Health, and Auro Lab in healthcare. The company has licensed its diabetic retinopathy AI model to healthcare providers and tech partners. This initiative will enable around 6 million free AI-assisted eye exams for diabetic patients in underserved areas of India and Thailand over the next ten years. The project aims to help doctors find problems early, lowering the risk of avoidable blindness among diabetic patients.

The Google programs are designed to make a big difference in farming, health, and sustainability in India. This will eventually improve the lives of many people in the process.
