Sowing Area Hits 109.23 Million Hectares: Will It Lead to Bumper Yields?

Published - 14 Sep 2024

New Delhi: The area planted with crops has increased to 109.23 million hectares as of September 6, up 2.16% from last year's 106.92 million hectares. This is nearly matching the normal sowing area of 109.58 million hectares.

The area planted with paddy has risen to 40.95 million hectares, surpassing the normal area of 40.15 million hectares by 2%. This is a 4.06% increase from last year's 39.35 million hectares. Coarse cereals, or Shree Anna, also exceeded the normal sowing area, reaching 18.87 million hectares compared to the usual 18.08 million hectares. This is a 3.85% increase from last year. Pulses saw a significant rise, with 12.62 million hectares planted this year, up 7.58% from last year's 11.73 million hectares.

Impact on Food Prices and Areas of Decline

The good news for India's agriculture is that a rise in sowing may help bring down the high food prices that have prevailed for quite some time. More crops being planted should help reduce food inflation, which fell to 5.42% in July after being over 7% for several months.

However, not all crops have fared well. Oilseed planting has increased slightly, while sugarcane cultivation has stayed the same. The area for jute and mesta has decreased, and cotton planting has also gone down.

Expert Opinion On this Growing Trend

Dr Anand Vishwakarma, project coordinator, All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Sesame and Niger, Jabalpur, addressed this growing trend. He said, “The sowing trend indicates that the production of kharif crops, including oilseeds, is expected to be huge. While the excessive rainfall predicted by national forecasters for September could be a cause for concern, overall production of all crops is likely to be better this time.
