In a big move to help farmers in Rajasthan, the state government is giving up to 50% in subsidies to start small nurseries on their farms. With this support, farmers will be able to increase their incomes and achieve a better financial status by establishing and managing such nurseries.
Under the National Horticulture Mission, farmers can now start a nursery with financial support from the government. This program, therefore, allows farmers to grow leguminous and multi-fruit plants. They need to list the types of fruits they plan to grow in their proposals.
To ensure high-quality plants, nurseries must include a mother tree block, with plants sourced from Indian Agricultural Research Institutes, agricultural universities, or state research centres. Nurseries also need to display a board funded by the National Horticulture Mission, showing the year of setup, total cost, and types of mother trees.
Farmers will need to build naturally ventilated greenhouses for mother trees. Advanced greenhouses should use fogging and irrigation systems. Maintenance will involve building shade net houses with 35% light screening and using micro-irrigation systems. These require a sterilization system for irrigation and soil treatment to keep the plants healthy and productive.
Farmers can get up to 50% of their costs covered, with subsidies up to ₹7.50 lakh. They can also apply for bank loans to cover 70-75% of the project cost. The total cost to set up a small nursery per hectare is about ₹15 lakh. The subsidy will be adjusted after 3 years. If the project is not completed as planned or if the nursery closes, the subsidy will need to be paid back.
Farmers can apply online at the District Horticulture Department with documents like land ownership proof, details of facilities, financial plans, and other necessary paperwork.
